Green and Frugal...

When I had my shop I'd look at all those luxuriously thick papers, fancy cards, embellishments and adhesives and wonder what effect the papercraft industry has on the environment.

It played a big part in my interest in downloadable craft supplies...we can print our own papers when we need, and on recycled inkjet paper, leaving the 'big boys' to concentrate on what we cannot produce ourselves like textured papers, foils and all the tools of the trade.

Since then, everyone is getting far more 'eco-friendly' than even just a few years ago and Crafters are well known for not throwing anything away, as well as being inventive with their stash...so I thought we could have a group dedicated to being frugal.

So, if you have any tips or tricks about how to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle for card making, tell us here!

Hi! everyone, I have been busy making christmas cards, and other special cards for people, that order their cards through me, as I never do the same card twice, unless someone requests it. I also used the light card that came with my new single sheets, and punched lots of different things out of it, there wasn't much left for the recycle bin. Some of the pamphlets, can also be used, that you get in the mail, and the little pieces that come out of the punches can be used as pebbles or grass or even a garden, it is up to your own imagination, then there is no waste at all.

I hope you all have a happy day crafting, and keep the hints and tips coming, we can all learn new ways to re-use things that way.

Quilling's going well Angela. Did you check out the quilled cards I have put in the photo section?

Hi Jan, yes I'm aware of nz's strict rules and Australia's but I'm wondering about poorer third world countries. Your granchildren are quite original using soup mix pieces, how wonderful, did they put enough on the card to make a pot of soup? I bet you loved it, my children used to use pasta and paint it for different things they did, and cinnamon scrolls, peppercorns, whatever I had in the kitchen they thought would be the right thing for whatever they were making. How is the quilling going?

I know New Zealand has pretty strict rules on any seeds coming into the country. NZ Customs opened an envelope sent to us recently from one of our grandchildren. They had made a card and decorated it with soup mix pieces. These must have showed up looking like seeds when they were scanned, so Customs opened the envelope. They did put a note on the envelope saying that they had opened the envelope.

Hi Barry, I used to grow south african tomatoes, when I had a big garden for my veges, they are really great tasting tomatoes. what countries, can't you send seeds to in a card? and what seeds are allowed in some counties? I had tears rolling down my face, picturing the poor people standing around, in awe of what they grew. It just goes to show people, the joy that can come from a few seeds. That is something I would like to do, as I have about 70 varieties of tomato seeds .I have been a seed saver all my life, my grandfather taught me when I was a small child, as he had a huge garden, and the biggest compost bins I have ever seen, and it was all organic, no sprays. I will have to find some people in poorer nations, that I can help in this way. I'd be interested in anymore of your good ideas Barry, keep them coming.

G'day Angela, you do have to be a bit careful what seeds you use, and where you send them. On one occasion, I used Cherry Tomato seeds and sent them to South Africa to a little bloke I met online who happened to live in one of the poorer parts of the country, and who loved gardening. He was so excited when the plants produced heaps of fruit that he sent a photo of a group gathered around looking in wonder at these plants. I also told him how to save and dry seeds for future plantings.

Barry, are you allowed to send cards with seeds in overseas? or just within the country you live in.

What a wonderful idea Barry to put seeds in it so that they have a gift of beautiful flowers as well a lovely card, that is using your brain, to give a gift within a gift, well done Barry.

Thanks for your welcome, I live in Wellington, but please don't hold that against me, finding out how to use this is going to be fun, at present I look after my 93 year old mother who has dementia, so finding time to do anything is challenging.
