Comment by Papercrazy on May 2, 2012 at 15:25 I've been following this thread and I'd like everyone to know there are also lots of FREE patterns on my blog, as well. :)) Several of my own designs, as well as many parchment sites, listed on the side bars, that also have FREE patterns listed. Come by and help yourself to whatever strikes your fancy!! My blog:
Comment by Mary E Price on May 1, 2012 at 13:04 Natalie. Remember that the new PCA templates are designed to be used with PCA tools. The ruler you describe will not be consistent with the Pergamano two needle tool as the gauges are different. The templates are quite pricey over here too. Pretty sure you will have most if not all of the websites with free designs too. Julie Roce, Judith Maslen, Pauline Loweth, Mette musen (no instructions),Piet and Annie Jannsen, Anne Quinn, Dorothy Holness. Some websites no longer offer them. Easiest thing to do is just do a search on the web.
Comment by Natalie on May 1, 2012 at 12:10 You're right, Mary ... I DO use Rotring. I didn't remember that until later when I was trying to remember HOW I got the tinta in the pen!!!! (My memory brokedededed again!)
(I'd type "LMAO", but Addison's Disease just isn't funny some times!)
Jan, I've collected some freebies from websites into one folder on my computer; easy to attach and send, if you like. I'll PM you my email address and you can decide if you want them.
(All WITH instructions!) ;)
I'll take a copy of YOUR list, too, please, Mary!!! :) :) :)
As for the tools 'n' stuff, Jan ... at least we only have to buy them once! I've got quite a few in reserves now, but still need to order something new with a lot of patterns. It's taken me 16 months to collect what I've got; I work part-time and am on a Disability Pension, and every spare cent goes on ParchStuff! LOL
What Mary said about the straight lines - only making ONE new hole at a time with one needle going into the last hole made - also works to make curved lines more even too. I recently bought the 'PCA EasyEdge', which is like a ruler but has a rippling along the edge to help make the holes even more even. Probably not a lot of difference for most people, but enables me to work on days when my hands are bad and I normally wouldn't be parching at all. It's meant for use with 'StampEdge' tools, but there's one size that suits the twin needle tools too.
Jan ... just don't forget to ENJOY it!!! See a design, do it, practice the bits you're not happy with, and do the whole thing over. YOUR eyes are as a good a test as any and will tell you what you don't like.
Aaannnnnddddd! ... slow and steady DOES win the race!!! :)
Comment by Mary E Price on May 1, 2012 at 8:46 Natalie is quite right in that you can use a technical pen, both Faber-Castell and Rotring make them. But...they are not cheap ( around £25+ in the UK) and you should not use Tinta white in them as it is too chalky. Use only Rotring white ink in them. I have a number and use down to a 0.1 nib at times. I don't think they are a good purchase for a new starter due to the outlay and you have to ensure they are kept clean to work well.
Jan...I'm assuming you have bought a Pergamano 2 needle tool?
To help you get a simple straight edge, use a ruler along the edge you are trying to perforate. Make the initial perforation and then realign one needle in the foremost hole already made and advance one hole at a time. There are many designers in the UK who offer free patterns which include instructions and also sell patterns. Send me a pm if you want a list. The best source of patterns and value is Parchment Craft Magazine.
Thank you so much Natalie For all that information on the which pens and how they perform I di have Gold ,Silverand and the white gel pens but i think as a beginner it is hard to find what is the best too use so I gohead on sometimes and get everything I have been buying nearly all the tools but the pattern books are quite expenciveso I have got a lot of my patterns free off the internet but some dont have the instructions so I guess but yesterday was the first time that I used the prong tool to the edge but not very good so how can you have a nice straight edge when use 2 pronge toolI found that hard to keep and then to cut it out?.
thank you again for all the help I have received from every one it is much appreicate.x

Comment by Natalie on April 30, 2012 at 22:55 Jan ..... for what it's worth ...... I would have quit parching if I had to use a mapping pen! I don't know if there was something wrong with the one I have, or if it was just me, but we did NOT get along!
I use the same Tinta ink, but in a Technical Pen. I have 2 or 3 different size nibs; the finest is actually TOO fine.
I've got the Mechanical Pencil for the white leads, and use that often. Of course, it'll leave no outline later, if that's what you want.
But ... I've also used the white gel pen where - on purpose - where I wanted thicker white lines. I've also used gold, silver, and copper gel pens at times.
I think the gel pens are great if you're really struggling with the mapping pen - especially if you're at the stage where I was and so frustrated you want to quit! - but ... for me ... the Technical Pens win hands down. I also believe the gel pens are great for beginners; quick and easy, and gets more quickly to where you want to be - embossing and colouring. Get hung up on the politics later when you go pro! ;)
As has been said, though, your whitework requires the erasable white leads.
Have a look at the design ... decide what YOU want to do with it ... and - most importantly - have fun!!
Comment by Mary E Price on April 30, 2012 at 11:52 Heather, if I can help send me a pm.
Comment by Heather Attwater on April 30, 2012 at 10:47 I agree with Mary, I prefer a mapping pen, or white pencil...the gel pens are way too thick, the lines are thick and I believe it detracts from the beauty of a parchment piece.......Mary do you instruct long distance....I live in Canada, am working towards my instructors certificate with Pergamano and am having difficulties.......xxx Heather
Comment by Mary E Price on April 30, 2012 at 9:40 No, you can't use a gel pen on parchment like a coloured pencil. It is usual to use blendable pencils or watercolour pencils on parchment.
After daughters wedding when I have more time, I'll attempt to post some technique videos on the site. You could have got a conte pen and nib when you ordered the white leads. I sent off for some extras for my students yesterday. JGD are excellent for deliveries.
Hi Well I have sent off for thewhite leads so I hope to get them in the next couple of days.Mind you I do use black leads for when I am drawing a image when I do my paintings I find they leave a very fine line that I do likeand can rub out , But I am not sure what I woulds use the gel pen for can you use it like a colored pencils as I use them sometimes for my pencil drawings and we all cannot like the same things thankyou for your help linda I will have to see which I like best, I dont have a mapping pen . x Love Jan
